FROM CONFLICT TO RESOLUTION Theory and Techniques of Couples Therapy Treatment

Course Overview

This course will cover a full range of couples therapy skills, all based on the theory and methods from Dr. Heitler's book From Conflict to Resolution.

The skills to be taught will include:

  • using the conflict resolution theoretical map for guiding treatment
  • teaching cooperative talking, listening, dialogue and other communications skills
  • guiding win-win conflict resolution
  • utilization of speedy access techniques for clarifying sub-conscious earlier-in-life sources of current sensitivities
  • use of anger management interventions, for keeping the sessions safe and for clients to implement at home
  • using rapid treatment methods, mainly utilizing visualizations, for dealing with anxiety, anger, and depression
  • enhancing positivity in the couple relationship

The teaching methods will include:

  • explanations of the skills
  • role-plays for the leader to model and participants to practice the skills
  • handouts for participants to use with clients
  • consultations on cases the group members currently are treating.

Susan Heitler, Ph.D

Dr. Susan Heitler, formerly of Denver and now living in Israel, has practiced as a clinical psychologist with a specialty in couples therapy for over 45 years. During this time, Dr. Heitler has published:

  • five books: two on psychotherapy theory and technique, one for families on how to stop thumb-sucking, and the Power of Two book and workbook for the general public on skills for marriage success.
